In this position you will be at the heart of our scalable technology platforms, being accountable for delivering common banking functionalities used in most of the propositions that ING offers to its customers.

The Touchpoint Platform is a critical enabler of ING’s strategy to become one truly global bank and is a key success factor on our path to rapidly transform from a traditional bank into a next-generation financial services platform that extends beyond banking. Through our platform, we provide a scalable foundation for digital channels and business solutions and position ING successfully in the new banking ecosystem.

The team

Within the tribe Platform Services there are three product areas: One Gate (Authentication, Identification and Consent, One Experience (Front End framework for Web and Mobile, and One PAM (Party and Agreement Management). As one of the three Product Area Leads, you will be responsible for maximizing the impact of your products and responsible for the skills and mastery of the product managers in your team. You do this together with your architect(s) and IT Area Lead. You report to the Tribe Lead Platform Services and have a functional line towards the Platform Experience Lead.

Roles and responsibilities

The product area

One Gate is to safeguard trust with our customers using out of the box services. The product area consists of four services: Authentication, Generic Means, Identification & Verification and Approval & Consent.

Product Area Lead = Product Manager + Chapter Lead

Banking Technology is positioned to be a product-led department that depends on strong products. Strong products come from strong product teams. And product teams are only as strong as their product managers. The Product Area Lead is responsible for ensuring strong product managers.

As such, the primary responsibility of the Product Area Lead is staffing and coaching strong product managers. As we aim for empowered product teams, the product manager is accountable for ensuring solutions that are viable, feasible and desirable.

This means that the product managers must contribute to her product teams a solid knowledge of the various constraints of the business – constraints from marketing, sales, service, finance, legal, and privacy are typical examples. The product managers must also contribute to the product teams a deep knowledge of our users and customers, and the data about how our customers engage with our products. Finally, the product managers are expected to track industry trends and the competitive landscape as they pertain to her product.

As a result the Product Area Lead should be able to convey a compelling story on how the products will evolve from a functional perspective as well as ensuring the non-functional requirements are being catered for. Such as reliability, security, compliance, performance, availability. The Product Area Lead knows that without customer usage there is no return on investment and should therefore be able to have a clear plan for adoption with frictionless integration and a financial plan to back it up.

While product teams are empowered to figure out the best solutions to the problems that need to be solved, we also hold those teams accountable to the results. Shipping is necessary, but not sufficient. We develop product managers that are not afraid to sign up for outcomes, even when this means they have to work through others to achieve the necessary results.

How to succeed

  • A technical background and proven experience with tech products (IT4IT)

  • Proven track record over 5 years as an individual contributor product manager responsible for value and viability of solutions.

  • Proven ability to go deep and quickly learn new domains, as well as a solid understanding big organizations and the organizational sensitivity that that requires.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the techniques and methods of modern product discovery and product delivery.

  • Proven track record of coaching and developing other people.

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of your role as the primary coach of your product managers, and how that differs from managing products directly.

  • Proven ability to engage with both individual contributors and leaders of all levels in constructive and collaborative relationships.

  • Demonstrate servant-based leadership and knowledge of leading by context rather than control.

  • Responsible for assisting with quarterly planning and assigning objectives (problems to solve) to product teams.
